    Inter-and Intrarater Reliability of Modified Lateral Scapular Slide Test in Healthy Athletic Men

    Objective. The reliability of lateral scapular slide test (LSST) at 90 degrees of abduction is controversial; therefore, in order to achieve more reliability it may be necessary to make changes in this particular position. Methods. Modified lateral scapular slide test (MLSST) was done on thirty male basketball players with two examiners in one session and for the retest with one examiner in the next week. The test was done in 7 positions: arm relaxed at the side (P1), 90 degrees of abduction (P2), 90 degrees of scaption without having a weight in hands (P3), 90 degrees of scaption with having 3 different weights (1, 2, and 4 kg) in hands (P4, P5, and P6, resp.), and 180 degrees of scaption without having a weight in hands (P7). Results. In P1 and P6, the ICC scores indicated the highest level of intrarater reliability. In P2, the ICC scores showed a fair level of intrarater reliability, as the minimum reliability. The maximum and minimum interrater reliability were P1 and P4, respectively. Conclusion. Scaption with loading, as a functional position in the overhead athletes, is a reliable positioning and may be replaced with the third position of the traditional LSST

    Evaluation of Central Auditory Processing of Azeri-Persian Bilinguals Using Dichotic

     Objectives: Sometimes there is no hearing impairment, but it is possible to have an auditory disorder. This is known as a central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). Verbal dichotic tasks are useful tools to evaluate CAPD, but there is almost no tool to assess this for Azeri people in their native language. The aim of this study is to evaluate central auditory processing of Azeri participants by Azeri dichotic digit test (ADDT).Materials & Methods: Participants were 52 normal Iranian Azeri students (mean age 23.27± 4.71 ; 26 female, 26 male).They were chosen by convenient sampling. ADDT was constructed and administered in free recall format along with a Persian dichotic digit test (PDDT). After two to four weeks, reliability was performed. Results: The mean of the right ear score of PDDT and ADDT were 98.90 and 99.09 percent, respectively. ADDT was reliable in almost all scores. There was no significant difference in performance between men and women in any score of both tests (p>0.05). The results showed a significant difference between both ears’ scores in PDDT (p<0.02) as well as in ADDT (p=0.00). The right ear advantage were seen in both tests. Conclusions: All participants performed significantly better on numbers presented in the right ear than the left ear in both tests. Central auditory processing of Azeri participants for Azeri is similar to that for Persian.

    Combination of Vestibular Rehabilitation and Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Improves Verbal and Visuospatial Memory: A Randomized Control Trial in Patients with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

    Background and Aim: Considering the critical input of the vestibular system to the hippocampus as an area involved in cognition, and vestibular disorders reported in patients with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI), we aimed to investigate the effects of Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) with and without noisy Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (nGVS) on cognitive function in patients with aMCI. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, twenty-two patients with aMCI were randomly assigned to two groups receiving: 1) VR for four weeks (VR group); 2) VR for four weeks with nGVS for three sessions (GVS+VR group). Outcome measures were Rey's Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), Corsi blocks, Visual Search (VS), and match to sample tests. Results: Mean immediate and delayed recalls of RAVLT, all of the outcomes of Corsi blocks and VS tests, and the error rate of the match to sample tests improved significantly after intervention in VR and GVS+VR groups. Between-group differences were observed for learning and delayed recalls of RAVLT (p=0.001, d=0.444 and p<0.001, d=0.512 respectively), reaction times 1 and 2 in VS (p=0.007, d=0.325 and p=0.001, d=0.446 respectively), the total correct trial of Corsi blocks (p=0.026, d=0.235), and error rate of the match to sample (p=0.017, d=0.266) tests. Conclusion: The synergistic effect of VR and GVS suggested that simultaneous use of both stimulations improves verbal and visuospatial memory in aMCI patients.     Development and psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the Phoneme Recognition Test A central auditory processing measure

    &nbsp; Objectives The present study evaluating the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Phoneme Recognition Test (P-PRT) in normal subjects and cochlear implant (CI) users. Material &amp; Methods This study includes developing the Persian phoneme recognition test (PRT), determining its validity and reliability, and comparing the results of a control group versus CI users. The test reliability was examined through a test-retest with an approximately five-week interval. In the present survey, 363 subjects were investigated in three stages. The face validity evaluation stage was conducted on 40 subjects. The psychometric properties of the P-PRT were evaluated in 323 individuals (225 normal subjects and 98 CI users). The test-retest reliability was examined in all the 225 subjects in the control groupand 40 CI users. ResultsThe results confirmed the face validity of the P-PRT. No significant differences were observed between the two genders in terms of performance in the P-PRT. Significant differences were observed between the control and CI groups. Evaluating the test-retest reliability suggested perfect reliability (r&gt;0.9) in both groups. Significant differences were observed in the P-PRT between the adults and the 7-year-old subjects compared to other age groups.     Effect of Subliminal Auditory Stimulation on Components of Auditory Late Responses and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data in Adults with Normal Hearing

    Background and Aim: The use of subliminal stimulation for unconscious effects on the target population is of great importance. while several studies have generated proper visual and auditory stimuli for subliminal stimulation, no study was found on the long-term effects of it. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the long-term effects of auditory subliminal presentation on the central nervous system structures using fMRI and Auditory Late Responses (ALRs). Methods: Participants were 26 students with a mean age of 24.03±2.32 years. There was four group in study. First, fMRI was done and ALRs were recorded for all of them. Then, music files containing words embedded in them was presented subliminally to participants in groups A and B for 10 days, group C received music file without any subliminal stimuli and group D was control group. It was repeated after 10 days. Results: The subliminal stimuli had significant effects on the amplitudes of P1, N1, P2, and P3 waves (F3=25.03, 25.41, 39.11, and 14.60; p<0.001). Between-group comparison showed significant changes in groups A and B compared to groups C and D (p<0.05). The difference in the recorded potential mean values showed the highest change for recording electrodes in the prefrontal, frontal, and central regions and the lowest change in parietal and occipital regions. There was no significant change for a latency component. Conclusion: Subliminal stimuli, presented appropriately and continuously, can leave longterm effects on the central nervous system structure causing extensive changes in the people’sattitude to a certain subject

    Comparison of the Ling-6 Sound Test with Warble Tone Stimuli in Audiometry of Hearing-Impaired Children Using Hearing Aids Considering Different Prescriptions and Normal-Hearing Children

    Background and Aim: Speech is a vital stimulus and the ultimate goal of hearing aid fitting to make the speech an audible signal. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether it is possible to track the threshold with speech phonemes and which of the two fitting methods of Desired Sensation Level version 5.0 (DSL v5.0) and National Acoustic Laboratories-Nonlinear 2 (NAL-NL2) provide better audibility for the phonemes. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the unaided thresholds of 18 normal-hearing children and the aided thresholds of 15 hearing-impaired children aged 5-8 years were evaluated with two types of stimuli. DSL v5.0 and NAL-NL2 methods were used for hearing aid fitting in hearing-impaired children. Results: There was a significant relationship between the unaided and aided thresholds of each phoneme and the warble tone threshold at the corresponding frequency (p<0.01), except for the phoneme /s/. The results showed a significant difference between the aided thresholds of each phoneme and the upper limit of the speech banana in the corresponding frequency for each method (Z=–4.99, p≤0.001). Conclusion: The results showed that phonemes could be used to assess unaided and aided thresholds. In the first fit, both methods estimated the amount of amplification that caused the average aided thresholds for these six phonemes for moderate to severe hearing loss to be positioned within the speech banana range, except for the average aided thresholds for the /s/ phoneme in the NAL-NL2 method that was placed outside the range

    Evaluation of Horse Riding Simulator with Strengthening Training Program and Conventional Physiotherapy in treatment of Children with Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy

      Background: Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders that affect the development and growth of the movement leading to the determination in the activities of the body, especially related to movements. These disorders occur as a result of damage or deterioration in certain parts of the brain. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of horse riding simulator with strengthening training program on children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy and comparing it with conventional physiotherapy program which is used in rehabilitation. Patients and Methods: Thirty participants were recruited in this study, who were diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Their ages between four and twelve years old, the children were  randomly classified into three groups of interventions Horse Riding Simulator with Strengthening Training, Horse Riding Simulator with conventional physiotherapy and control group with conventional physiotherapy).for each intervention, the children receive 24 sessions three times a week, [Gross Motor Function Measure-66, pediatric balance scale, and Modified Modified Ashworth Scale] were used to evaluate children in all groups both pre and post each intervention. Results: Post-intervention in the groups of horse riding simulator and strengthening training and horse riding with conventional physiotherapy shows significantly improved in gross motor function measures -66(P=0.021), (P=0.001) respectively, while no significant difference have been noted in conventional physiotherapy group. on the other hand, no significant improvement have been shown in all intervention groups in Pediatric Balance Scale. Furthermore, muscle tone reduced with a too small value of significant improvement in a group of horse riding simulator with strengthening training in adductor muscle of hip joint for right and left leg (P=0.052),(P=0.059) respectively, while no significant differences have been reported in other studies groups, there wasno significant improvement have been shown in muscle tone for knee extensor and ankle plantar flexors except too small values close to significant level in the ankle plantar flexors for the right leg in a group of horse riding with strengthening training (P= 0.050).  Conclusion: The evidence from this study confirmed that horse riding simulator with strengthening training has a positive effect on (GMFM-66) and could reduce spasticity in the muscle for children with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy

    Development of the Persian version of the Vertigo Symptom Scale: Validity and reliability

    Background: Vertigo Symptom Scale (VSS) is a proper instrument for assessing the patient status, clarifying the symptoms, and examining the relative impact of the vertigo and anxiety on reported handicap. Our aim is the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the VSS into Persian language (VSS-P) and investigating its validity and reliability in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders. Materials and Methods: VSS was translated into Persian. Cross-cultural adaptation was carried out on 101 patients with peripheral vestibular disorders and 34 participants with no history of vertigo. They completed the Persian versions of VSS, dizziness handicap inventory (DHI), and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI). Internal, discriminant, and convergent validities, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were determined. Results: The VSS-P showed good face validity. Internal validity was confirmed and demonstrated the presence of two vertigo (VSS-VER) and autonomic-anxiety (VSS-AA) subscales. Significant difference between the median scores for patient and healthy groups was reported in discriminate validity (P <0.001). Convergent validity revealed high correlation between both BAI and DHI with VSS-P. There was a high test-retest reliability; with intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.89, 0.86, and 0.91 for VSS-AA, VER, and VSS-P, respectively. The internal consistency was good with Cronbach's alpha 0.90 for VER subscale, 0.86 for VSS-AA subscale, and 0.92 for the overall VSS-P. Conclusion: The Persian version of the VSS could be used clinically as a valid and reliable tool. Thus, it is a key instrument to focus on the symptoms associated with dizziness
